Wen Weng established the first public high school during the Han Dynasty between 143 and 141 BC. He opened the school in Chengdu, China and called it Chengdu Shishi High School, which means stone house. A fire destroyed the school and it was rebuilt in 194 AD. By the Ming Dynasty it was rubble again. It wasn’t until 1661 that it reopened as a public middle school by the government.
They rebuilt on the sight of the Chengdu Shishi High School, calling it Shishi Middle School. In the 1900s, its name changed several times before returning to its original name, Chengdu Shishi High School, in 1940. The school is a model for secondary schools nationwide. In 1952, with the establishment of the new government People’s Republic of China, the name was once again changed.
Then during the Cultural Revolution, the school was destroyed for a third time, leaving no original buildings. Again, they rebuilt the school and returned it to its original name by 1983.
